History

Two world-class engineering companies constitute the backbone of Scana Machining, formed through the merger of Rolls Royce production at Höje in Kristinehamn and the former Bofors gun works in Karlskoga. Two distinguished companies with heritages that can be traced back in time hundred of years.

Karlskoga/Bofors

During the reign of Queen Christina, a helve hammer was built in 1646 at Bofors. Iron and steel processing predominated for more than two centuries, but at the end of the 1800:s a successful specialization in forged steel for gun barrels was begun. This marked the origin of the modern Bofors and its development into a highly respected defence industry.

Kristinehamn

As a southern link of the Bergslag canal, an important transport route for the area’s industries, the railroad to Kristinehamn was inaugurated in mid 1800:s. The workshop that was constructed for the maintenance of the railroad constitutes the foundation of Rolls Royces enterprise in Kristinehamn and Scana Machining establishment at Höje. Later on locomotives, diesel engines, turbines and other equipment were also manufactured here. In 1967, Europe’s most modern plant was inaugurated and production was focused on turbines and propulsion systems for ships.
