Scana Steel Stavanger’s customers are users of special steel and high-alloy steel with stringent requirements for design and documentation. These are mainly found in the oil and gas, marine, energy, mining and general mechanical industries.
Scana Steel Stavanger was founded in 1910 and has produced steel since 1913. The business is located at Jørpeland outside Stavanger, Norway. The company’s business concept was based on the idea of remelting scrap steel from the local cannery industry and ship scrapping. Scana Industrier bought the company in 1991.
Market and customers
Scana Steel Stavanger operates in a global market, but the majority of its customers are in Scandinavia and northern Europe. The company’s competitiveness is today in good shape and Scana Steel Stavanger are able to produce small series of high alloy customised steel components of both forged and cast steel. The company is in addition to Scana Leshan, the only companies in Scana with a foundry.
In 2009, Scana Steel Stavanger had an export level of 56 %, with the main export going to the UK, Sweden, Brazil and Germany. There is tough competition in the market; however, the company´s competitive edge is that it is relatively small. We have the advantage of operating in specific niches with small series, where quality and delivery time are vital. This has provided the company with several new customers within anchor handling equipment and buoy loading.
In 2008, Scana Steel Stavanger landed its first offshore contract in Brazil, with Petrobas as the end customer. Deliveries for this project have progressed according to plan. The company view Brazil as a very important market in the future.
In 2009, the company has secured several new customers within marine and energy. Advanced, cast details and finished machined surfaces in high alloy rust free steel qualities have given the company a new edge in turbine manufacture.
Scana Steel Stavanger signed in 2009 a new general agreement with Thyssen Krupp Fördertechnik as OEM supplier of wear resistant material.
Scana Steel Stavanger is affected by the financial crisis and a lower demand for the company’s products. To adapt cost level to production, some of the work force has been laid off. At the same time, the company´s commitment to sales has been intensified and production has been made more efficient. This will provide the company with a reinforced competitive position when the market returns to better form.
