Scana Industries ASA manufacture and work among other things with steel and other alloys. We realise that as a player in this market, we contribute both considerably to recycling – and have discharges to the outer environment. It is a fact that the world needs steel, and we see it as our task to supply as cleanly a manufactured product as possible, thus securing the smallest negative impact on the environment as possible. Our environmental initiative in China is set at a high global level, and could have been transferred anywhere in the world from day one. This is something we are proud of.
STEEL
Steel production is in essence a recycling industry, where a lot of scrap metal is recycled. On the other hand, energy is spent to recycle.
Björneborg
Scana Steel Björneborg meets the goals of the Scana group to have as small an impact on the environment as possible. As a concrete measure, scrap steel is recycled, and is chiefly collected from local suppliers, at a distance of maximum 150 km. The company is ISO 9001 certified.
The large investments in 2009 has yielded considerable environmental profits. For example, the development of the steel works has lead to a considerable reduction in waiting times for the melted steel in the light arc ovens. This in turn leads to a large energy conservation.
From 2009 the rules for depositing waste became stricter in Sweden. For Scana Steel Björneborg this means that the existing depot is supplemented with a new deposit area. This new area fulfils the new conditions, hindering metals in seeping out into the subsoil areas.
Scana Steel Björneborg AB has a railroad track leading into the production area and can deliver products by rail. This means of transport reduces emissions to air.
Stavanger
The company is ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certified. One of our main suppliers, FOSECO, has named us the most environmental friendly foundry in Europe. This claim is built upon our production choices of forming sand, binding agents and hardeners. The company continually employs new routines to reduce negative impact on the environment, be it waste management, filtering and reductions. Measurements are done regularly according to international standards.
Jørpeland Kraft
In connection with the licencing award, the Norwegian Oil and Energy Department stated in their press release that in a good way, the development takes care of the many different interests in Jørpelandsvassdraget: “The development will increase access to renewable energy, and is a good contribution to better the power situation without any new [environmental] interventions”. The chosen development alternative secures a good flow of water in the river, ensuring important environmental values connected to fishing, bathing and outdoor life.
Söderfors
The environmental impact from Söderfors is through emissions to air and water. A cleaning plant for cooling agents are installed, and measurements show that the discharged water is cleaner than the water influx. Throughout 2009 Söderfors has fulfilled all demands from government and customers and ther has been no incidents or unwanted discharges.
Scana Steel Söderfors has strengthened the environmental commitment and employed a person with responsibilities for energy and outer environment. This organisational change has lead to the establishing of a cross professional environmental council that strengthens the control of the environmental work and a stronger focus on the targets of environmental work in the business plan. The work of the environmental council has already bettered the waste disposal routines.
Booforge
Booforge is a company with long traditions, but works determinedly towards modernising and reducing any negative impact on the environment. In the recent years, the company has made rather large environmental changes and also changed routines regarding production. We also make changes to lessen energy consumption. Booforge has among other things introduced seawater as cooling agent for the heat treatment plant. Booforge continually measures the oil consumption to incite lower consumption and make production more effective.
Leshan
Leshan Scana is situated in the middle of a Chinese region of about four million people. The company was earlier an old state driven business that was the reason for a great deal of pollution, mainly because everything was coal based. Around the turn of millennium the company converted to electrical and gas power, and by the end of 2007, a dust collection system was installed for the entire company. The company runs entirely on hydropower generated from a nearby river.
MARINE
Scana’s marine business areas works for the most part within high-technological manufacture, which has no or little negative impact on the environment.
Volda
Scana Volda’s production yields products that are contributing to the protection and safeguard of the environment, crew and load. Among the products, we find emergency electromotors for chemical tankers and flexible solutions to make engines run more environmentally friendly. Optimisation of engine usage is a continuing ambition for the company.
Skarpenord
The production of hydraulic actuators and systems at Skarpenord yields no negative discharges. The waste from the production is scrap iron/metal and is sold as scrap metal. This is both environmentally friendly and provides income. The company mainly uses electrical power for the production, but also some diesel fuel is used for heating the production halls.
Zamech
A newly acquired technological platform combined with existing gear and propeller technology from Scana Volda and remote control systems from Scana Mar-El, allows the company to develop further in relation to tomorrow’s environmental and market related requirements.
OIL AND GAS
Offshore Technology
Scana Offshore Technology repairs equipment and is ISO 9001 certified. Our activity has very little negative impact on the outer environment, but we continually monitor and prepare new measurable standards to how our activity may have an impact on the environment.
Materials Technology Centre
Scana MTC has only a small impact on the outer environment. This happens through our non-destructive testing (NDT). In this process, chemicals are used in a controlled environment to measure the surface of steel constructions. After use, the chemicals are handled and returned as toxic waste. We have a constant focus on control of chemicals.
Offshore Vestby
The company was established in 1953, but has moved to modern production halls. The company has today no negative discharges or emissions to the environment, neither wather, nor air. In connection with thermal treatment, the company now builds new premises adjusted to present regulations. Offshore Vestby is a competence and design company that has no negative impact on the outer environment.
