The advantage of experience
The history of Scana Zamech dates back to 1837 when Ferdinand Gotlob Schichau opened a machine workshop “Schichau-Werke” in Elblag.
The workshop manufactured elements for steam engines, equipment for sugar factories, oil mills, lumber mills as well as hydraulic presses and rollers. Not long after “Schichau Werke” set up a shipyard where in 1855 the Borussia steamer, the first seagoing ship with a steel hull and a propeller, was launched.
Apart from merchant ships, dredgers and ferries "Schichau Werke" built battle cruisers, battle ships and torpedo boats then in 1916 they started the production of submarines and locomotives.
On the basis of "Schichau Werke" in 1948 a well-known Polish state-owned company named “Mechanical Works ZAMECH” was established which specialised in the production of steam turbines, marine equipment, transmission gears and port cranes.
ABB, which in 1990 took over Zamech and functioned under the name of ABB Zamech Ltd., continued to a large extent the production range of ZAMECH marine products respected both on the domestic market as well as abroad.
Then, in 1997 electric equipment i.e. electric drives and automation systems were added to the traditional scope of production for the shipbuilding industry. In 1999 a separate legal entity called ABB Zamech Marine Sp. z o.o. was set up and continued the production of marine equipment until December 2006 when as a result of a consolidation of ABB companies in Poland it became a business unit of ABB Sp. z o.o.
In February 2009 Scana Industrier ASA signed an agreement to acquire the Polish marine activities of ABB and formed a locally based company SCANA Zamech which extended the SCANA product portfolio and developed its propulsion activities into large, new customer group.
