Offshore/On-site honing of large cylinders

Scana Offshore Vestby has designed, developed, and are now fabricating a system for offshore or on-site honing of large cylinders. Tensioning systems onboard drilling rigs are often constructed so that they are complicated and time consuming to disassemble and demobilize. As the response to an enquiry from one of the major rig operators in the North Sea, Scana Offshore Vestby started working on the solution.

Scana Offshore Vestby has designed a honing machine able to hone cylinders from 200 mm to 600 mm internal diameter. The machine is constructed to be clamped on to the outside of the cylinder housing, and will be able to work on both vertical and horizontal aligned cylinders. It will sometimes be necessary to make small adjustments to adapt the machine to the actual cylinder. This is solved by supplying adaptor brackets, fitting both the cylinder and the standard interface on the honing machine. The brackets are bolted, allowing easy exchange.

A mobile honing machine will reduce the cost of repairing large cylinders a lot. The price raising factor of cylinder repair projects is often the down time of the rig. The possibility of doing this job offshore will practically eliminate the time spent on demobilizing and remobilizing of equipment. The honing machine is built up by components, allowing easy, cost effective transportation.

Our service operators will operate the honing machine. This team also has the experience of performing other necessary repairs on large cylinders. This could be changing seals and gliders, changing bearings in wire sheaves etc. Our service operators have excellent experience and knowledge from working offshore, and they have the necessary certificates and approvals for the job.
