Scana Steel Söderfors is located at Söderfors, north of Stockholm and close to other major steel producers. The company has been a part of the Scana group since 1995. As at 31st December 2008, the company had 164 employees and a turnover of SEK 329 million.
Market and customers
Scana Steel Söderfors exports 50 per cent of its turnover. Europe is the largest market, but also China, Japan and USA are important markets. Scana Steel Söderfors operates in five different market segments: steel, machine, energy, marine and oil & gas. The customers are typically steel makers, machine builders, system suppliers, component suppliers and wholesalers. In 2008 the company experienced a record-breaking order inflow. However the market downturn also affected Scana Steel Söderfors towards the end of the year. The company has reduced costs and boosted market and sales activities in order to adapt to current market conditions.
Products
Scana Steel Söderfors supplies niche products and the main products are forged or rolled bars and components. The focus on open die forgings with a high degree of technical content is continuing. Typical products here are shafts, rotors, plates and connectors. Also a high degree of semi-finished billets are produced and with products of ball bearing steel being a representative example. Rolled products are found in high alloy steel products such as round and flat profiles. Typical are bars in different stainless grades with emphasis on duplex and super duplex grades. An important product for a long time has also been high-alloy tool steels and PM steels in the form of bars, and round and flat profiles.
During the year, investment decisions were taken to strengthen the company’s aim to increase the amount of value-added products and also to meet the demands of strategic customers. The steel mill at Scana Steel Björneborg will increase its production capacity to be able to supply Scana Steel Söderfors with billets. A new furnace will be installed at Scana Steel Söderfors to increase heating capacity for the forge. The company’s machining capacity will also be increased. Thus the company will be well-positioned to increase production and profitability when the market recovers.
