Scana Steel Björneborg refines steel in an integrated chain that includes its own steelworks, heat treatment,
forge with a 4,500 tonne press and several well-equipped machining units.
The company was founded 354 years ago, making it one of the group’s most venerable companies – not to mention
one of the oldest ironworks in the world. The decent order reserve at the outset of the year, combined
with a number of cost cutting measures, has kept the turnover and profit at a very good level, despite the ongoing
financial recession and economic downturn. At the turn of the year, the company had a turnover of NOK 640 million.
Scana Steel Björneborg exports 70 % of its turnover, directly or through other companies in the group. The largest
market is Europe, but export also goes to USA, Asia and other parts of the world.
The entire steel industry has throughout 2009 been faced with a low demand. As a consequence, the company’s
organisation and crew has been adjusted accordingly and marketing has been intensified. Scana Steel Björneborg has,
adhering to the long-term strategy, continued our work on increasing the refinement of our products. The result is an
increasing number of customers ordering more finished products than earlier.
Scana Steel Björneborg’s customers have shown their appreciation of our quality products during the year. The
company has been awarded “Best Contractor” by Brush Electrical Machines for our delivery of generator shafts.
The market in 2010 is expected to be demanding still. Scana Steel Björneborg’s market commitment will continue to
focus on established customer relations, cooperation with other Scana companies, and also on new markets.
In the course of the recent three years, large, productivityincreasing investments have been carried out, and the
majority was concluded during the summer of 2009:
• Smelting plant and heat treatment ovens
• Lathes for the machining workshop
• Development of the iron works from 75,000 tonnes to
95,000 tonnes in the first stage. (The second stage will
increase capacity to 115,000 tonnes.)
• New forge manipulator
• Eco-investments in iron works and forge to lessen
emissions to air, plus a new deposit to lessen risk of
affecting groundwater
• New, adapted premises for the quality department,
market department and iron works.
Investments have been carried out according to schedule and have resulted in more reliable production equipment
with a higher total capacity.
In the course of the recent year, Scana Steel Björneborg has systematically worked to shorten the lead-time for all
products. The company has introduced bottleneck control, setting a maximum limit for the number of products at work
when facing critical processes. The entire planning process has also been reviewed, resulting in shorter transport and
logistics times.
The result is that the number of products at work has been reduced to a large extent, the delivery precision has
increased and throughput times have been shortened. In average, the lead-time has been shortened with around 30 %,
but the company also displays a number of examples of having been able to reduce the throughput time with over 50 %.
Scana Steel Björneborg delivers customer designed products for three market segments: Industrial, Marine and
Energy. The company’s main products are forged, rotation symmetrical, large and long components of steel with a
high technical content. Scana Steel Björneborg also supplies raw forged and semi-finished billets. The products are for
instance axles, shafts, joints, risers, poles and sheet metal.
The company’s products are often key components for the customer, and are delivered with different degrees of
completion, depending on the customer requirements. The company has an ongoing cooperation with material institutes
to further increase the quality of our products.
